Social media is one part of the communications landscape that just keeps on growing and becoming more and more influential.
The likes of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat are always offering up new innovations to users – and sometimes it’s easy to get overwhelmed. To level the playing field and give yourself a solid chance to shine in this rapidly expanding media platform here are five tricks you can apply to become a social media rockstar:
1. Think niche and dominate
When you first jump into using social media it can be exciting to climb onto every platform. Don’t. It’s a far better idea to choose one or two and go to town on them. To make an impact with social media takes an extraordinary amount of time and energy and it is far better to devote yourself to one platform exclusively and put everything into it than to spread yourself to thin by using every platform.
2. Go where your audience is
So you’ve decided to use social media to build your brand. Want to know which one you should use? The one your audience is using. While it’s common for consumers to consume content from all social media platforms there will invariably be one platform that attracts their attention the most. Find out what that platform is, and then throw everything you have at it.
3. Start creating content and store it
You’ve nailed down a social media platform your favoured consumer likes and you’re ready to engage with them on it. Hold up there, not so fast. First you need to create some content, and more importantly you need to store it. Before you start posting it is important that you build up a healthy reserve of at least 50 posts before you start pushing it out there. The most important thing with social media is to stay consistent, and a backlog of content allows you freedom to do this. Of course, you still need to be spontaneous when the moment arises, but never forget to use your reserves and be prepared.
4. Staying on track – The Content Calendar
Now that you have your content ready to go you need to get your game plan in order – and that’s where the content calendar comes into play. By marking out what content is supposed to go out on each day you’ll stay consistent, won’t repeat yourself, and stay fresh in your audiences mind.
5. Talk with your audience
With all of the above steps in place you’ll begin to start dominating social media. But if you want to really be loved by your audience then you have to talk to them. Entrepreneur and social media extraordinaire Gary Vaynerchuk has a saying that goes: ‘No tweet left behind’. It holds true. While it is easy to push out content to your followers they’ll never grow to appreciate or love your brand if you are just talking at them, and not with them. Get into the habit of responding to their comments, asking them questions, and liking their content that they create from your content. You win at social media by being social, and that means you have to care about your audience with everything you’ve got.
So implement these tricks and turn yourself into a social media rock god!
